Gunung Agung yang meletus pada Selasa (21/11/2017) pukul 17:05 WITA, termasuk letusan jenis freatik. Tinggi asap kelabu tebal dengan tekanan sedang maksimum 700 meter.  Letusan freatik terjadi akibat adanya uap air bertekanan tinggi. Uap air tersebut terbentuk seiring dengan pemanasan air bawah tanah atau air hujan yang meresap ke dalam tanah di dalam kawah kemudian kontak langsung dengan magma.
